Blocking is private on Telegram: the blocked person gets no notice. What they see instead is a profile that seems to have stopped updating, which is why a block is easy to confuse with someone who simply hides their last seen.

Quick answer

If someone blocked you, you see last seen a long time ago, no profile photo updates, messages stuck at one tick and calls that do not go through. One sign alone is not proof; all of them together usually are.

1. Signs that someone blocked you

  • Their status shows last seen a long time ago. Telegram's FAQ says you always see this when someone has blocked you.
  • You stop seeing their profile photo or its updates.
  • Your messages stay at one tick and never get the second tick.
  • Your calls do not go through.

Each of these can also have another reason, such as strict privacy settings or an inactive account.

What each status means: Telegram last seen.

2. What a block changes

The blocked personCan they?
Send you private messages or call youNo. Messages do not reach you.
See your last seen and profile photo updatesNo
Get a notice that they were blockedNo
Read your messages in a shared groupYes. A block covers private chats, not groups you are both in.

3. How to block someone

  1. Open the chat with the person and tap their name.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Block User and confirm.

You can also add people in Settings › Privacy and Security › Blocked Users. For spam, use Report as well, so Telegram can act on the account.

4. How to unblock

Open Settings › Privacy and Security › Blocked Users, tap the person and choose Unblock. Messages sent while they were blocked are not delivered later.

5. Blocked by a person or limited by Telegram?

If you cannot message people who are not in your contacts, the block may come from Telegram, not from one person. That is a spam limit, often after reports, and it has nothing to do with a single contact.

  • Message @SpamBot in Telegram to see whether your account is limited and until when.
  • A frozen account can still read chats but cannot send messages; appeal from the app.
