Telegram notifications are set in two places: in Telegram itself and in your phone's settings. When they stop, one of the two is usually switched off.

Quick answer

Open Settings, Notifications and Sounds and turn on notifications for private chats, groups and channels. If they still do not arrive, allow Telegram notifications in the phone settings and turn off battery saving for Telegram.

1. Where are notification settings?

  • Open Settings and tap Notifications and Sounds.
  • There are separate switches for private chats, groups, channels and stories.
  • Exceptions show chats that have their own setting.

2. Notifications for one chat only

  1. Open the chat, group or channel and tap its name at the top.
  2. Tap Notifications or the bell.
  3. Choose to mute it, mute it for a while, or change the sound.

3. Turn notifications off

  • To mute a single chat, press and hold it in the chat list and tap Mute.
  • To mute every group or channel, turn off that type in Notifications and Sounds.
  • Muted chats still count unread messages; you can hide that count in the same settings.

4. Notifications are not arriving

  1. Check that the chat is not muted. A crossed-out speaker next to the chat name means it is.
  2. Check the switches in Notifications and Sounds.
  3. If you are logged in on Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web and active there, your phone may stay quiet. Close or log out of the other device.
  4. Update Telegram, then restart the phone.
  5. Use Reset All Notifications at the bottom of Notifications and Sounds if a setting got stuck.

5. Phone settings

  • Android: open the phone Settings, Apps, Telegram, Notifications and allow them. Turn off battery optimisation for Telegram and allow it to run in the background.
  • iPhone: open Settings, Notifications, Telegram and allow notifications. Check that a Focus mode is not hiding them.
  • A weak or filtered connection also delays notifications, because they come from Telegram's servers.
