Creating a Telegram channel takes about two minutes. What decides whether it grows is the setup: a clear name, a searchable username, a description that says who it is for, and a plan for the first posts. Menu labels vary slightly by app version and platform, so follow the steps and adjust to what you see.
1. Create the channel
- Open Telegram and start a new message (the pencil or compose button on mobile, the menu on desktop).
- Choose New Channel.
- Enter a channel name and, optionally, a photo and short description.
- Tap Next and choose Public or Private (see below).
- Add the first subscribers from your contacts, or skip and share the link later.
You are now the owner of the channel. Only owners and admins can post; subscribers read and react.
2. Public or private?
| Public channel | Private channel | |
|---|---|---|
| Link | Short link with your username (t.me/name) | Invite link that you can revoke |
| Search | Can appear in Telegram search | Not searchable |
| Best for | Growth, brands, news, communities | Paid content, teams, small groups |
| Change later | Yes, you can remove the username | Yes, you can add a username |
If growth is the goal, choose public.
3. Name, description and username
- Name: short and clear. Put the topic in it if you can.
- Username: usually at least 5 characters, using letters, numbers and underscores, and starting with a letter. Shorter, memorable names are taken quickly; see our guide on Fragment usernames if you want a premium name.
- Description: say who the channel is for and what they get, in one or two lines. It appears in search and on the invite preview.
- Photo: a simple, recognisable square image that stays readable at small size.
4. Admins, signatures and a discussion group
- Admins: open the channel settings, then Administrators, to add people who can post or manage. Give each person only the rights they need.
- Discussion group: link a group so every post has a comments section. This is the easiest way to build engagement. Our group growth guide covers running it.
- Signatures and reactions: turn on author signatures if several people post, and enable reactions to see what readers like.
- Protect content: restrict forwarding and saving if the content is exclusive.
5. The first week
- Publish five to ten good posts before you promote, so new visitors see substance.
- Pin a welcome post that explains what the channel offers and how often you post.
- Share the link in your website, social profiles and related communities.
- Ask for feedback and reactions, and repeat what works.
- Check the channel statistics when Telegram makes them available; they usually appear once the channel reaches a minimum number of subscribers.
Growth from here is covered step by step in how to grow a Telegram channel, and earning from it in how to monetize a channel.

Frequently asked questions
Is it free to create a Telegram channel?
Yes. Creating and running a channel is free. Paid features such as promotion and premium usernames are optional.
How many channels can I create?
Telegram limits how many public usernames one account can have. If you hit a limit, the app shows a message; check its current rules.
What is the difference between a public and private channel?
Public channels have a username link and can appear in search. Private channels are joined only through an invite link.
Can I change the channel username later?
Yes. You can change or remove the username in the channel settings, but old links will stop working, so change it carefully.
How do I get my first subscribers?
Publish several posts first, then share the link on your website, social profiles and related communities, and link a discussion group to invite comments.
After setting up a channel, use the Telegram for business guide to plan customer support, contact details and written terms.
