Telegram lets the owner (creator) of a channel or group pass full ownership to another person. The new owner gets every right the creator had, including the ability to add or remove administrators and to delete the chat. Because this is powerful, Telegram adds security conditions before the option works.

Free checklist: tick every step of the deal with the Telegram channel handover checklist.
After the transfer: decide which admins and bots keep which rights with Telegram admin permissions explained.

1. Requirements before you start

Not sure when your transfer opens? The free ownership transfer checker works it out from your dates.

RequirementWhoWhy it matters
Two-step verification enabled for at least 7 daysCurrent ownerIf it was just turned on, the transfer is blocked until the waiting period passes
Logged in on the device for more than 24 hoursCurrent ownerA freshly logged-in session cannot transfer ownership
The new owner is already an administratorNew ownerOwnership can only be passed to an existing admin
The owner knows their two-step verification passwordCurrent ownerTelegram asks for it to confirm the transfer

To turn on two-step verification, open Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. If you are selling a channel, do this well before the sale so the 7-day wait does not delay the deal.

2. Step-by-step: transfer ownership

The labels below are from the official Telegram apps; wording can vary slightly between versions and platforms.

  1. Open the channel or group and tap its name at the top to open the info page.
  2. Tap Edit (the pencil icon), then Administrators.
  3. If the new owner is not an admin yet, tap Add Admin and choose them. For a channel, they may need to join as a subscriber first.
  4. Open that admin's rights screen and enable every permission, including Add New Admins.
  5. Tap Transfer Channel Ownership (or Transfer Group Ownership) at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Confirm the warning and enter your two-step verification password.

After the confirmation, the new owner appears as the owner in the administrators list, and the previous owner becomes a regular admin.

3. The transfer option is missing or fails

What you seeLikely causeFix
No “Transfer ownership” buttonThe admin does not have every permission, or you are not the ownerEnable all rights including Add New Admins; confirm you are the creator
Message about two-step verification2FA is off or was enabled less than 7 days agoEnable it and wait out the period

Telegram's developer documentation lists the errors behind these messages (channels.editCreator). The app usually shows a plain-language version, often with the time left to wait:

ErrorMeaningWhat to do
PASSWORD_MISSINGTwo-step verification is not enabledTurn it on in Privacy and Security, then wait
PASSWORD_TOO_FRESHThe 2FA password was set or changed recently (the documentation says less than 24 hours)Wait for the time shown; do not change the password again meanwhile
SESSION_TOO_FRESHThis device logged in less than 24 hours agoUse an older session or wait for the time shown
CHANNELS_ADMIN_PUBLIC_TOO_MUCHThe account already administers too many public channelsMake some of its public channels private, or transfer to another account
USER_CHANNELS_TOO_MUCHThe new owner is in too many channels and groupsThe new owner leaves unused chats first
USER_PRIVACY_RESTRICTEDThe new owner's privacy settings block being addedThe new owner joins first or adjusts the setting
INPUT_USER_DEACTIVATEDThe chosen account was deletedConfirm the buyer's current account before starting

Waiting periods in the apps have changed over time, so trust the exact time the error shows rather than a fixed number from a guide.

4. What the new owner should do next

  • Open Administrators and remove any admin you do not recognise, including the previous owner if that was agreed.
  • Revoke and recreate invite links for private chats.
  • Review linked discussion groups, bots and the public username.
  • Make sure your own account has two-step verification enabled.

5. Sequencing the handover during a sale

Because ownership can only go to an existing admin, a common safe sequence is: agree terms in writing, add the buyer as admin so they can verify the chat, complete payment by the agreed method, then transfer ownership. Our escrow and guarantor guide explains how to protect the payment step, and the ownership transfer buyer guide covers how account handovers differ from channel and group transfers.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I transfer ownership of my Telegram channel?

The owner usually needs two-step verification enabled for at least 7 days and a session older than 24 hours, and the new owner must already be an admin with every permission enabled.

Can I transfer a Telegram channel to someone who is not an admin?

No. Add them as an administrator first, give them all permissions, and then the transfer option becomes available.

Does the old owner keep any rights after the transfer?

The previous owner becomes a regular administrator. The new owner can remove them from the admin list.

Is transferring ownership the same for groups and channels?

Yes. The process and security conditions are the same; the button is labelled Transfer Channel Ownership or Transfer Group Ownership.

How do I transfer ownership of a Telegram group after buying it?

The seller transfers the group to you by making you an admin with all permissions, selecting Transfer Group Ownership and confirming with their two-step verification password. This is under Edit, then Administrators, in the group's info page. Agree payment and handover steps in writing first; afterward, verify that you appear as the owner and remove unfamiliar admins.

How long does a Telegram ownership transfer take?

The timing depends on whether the current owner already meets Telegram's security requirements. The current owner normally needs two-step verification enabled for at least 7 days and a device session older than 24 hours. If Telegram blocks the transfer, follow the exact waiting time shown in the app; waiting periods have changed, so there is no single fixed wait for every case.
