Short answer: you cannot create a Telegram account with no number at all, but you do not have to use your personal SIM, and you can make sure nobody sees the number you did use. Here is how each option works and what it costs you in money, convenience and risk.
1. Why Telegram asks for a phone number
Telegram uses the phone number as the account identifier and as a spam barrier: creating thousands of accounts is much harder when each one needs a working number. The login code is sent to the Telegram app on another logged-in device or by SMS, which is why losing access to the number can make recovery difficult.
2. First, hide the number you already have
Many people only want strangers not to see their number. You can do that on any account:
- Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.
- Set Who can see my phone number to Nobody.
- Set Who can find me by my number to My Contacts.
- Create a public username so people can reach you without the number.
3. The main options compared
| Option | Privacy | Cost | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal SIM with privacy settings | Good from other users | None | Number still tied to your identity |
| Second SIM or eSIM | Good | Low monthly cost | Losing the SIM means losing easy recovery |
| Fragment anonymous +888 number | Very high, no SIM | Purchase in Gram (formerly TON), varies by market | Tied to your TON wallet; lose the wallet, lose login access |
| Temporary “receive SMS” number | Low, number is shared | Low | Someone else can log in later; often already flagged |
| An existing, aged account | Depends on handover | Per account | Only safe with a proper handover and your own 2FA |
4. How Fragment anonymous numbers work
Fragment is Telegram's official marketplace, based on the TON blockchain, for collectible usernames and anonymous numbers. An anonymous number starts with +888, is not connected to any SIM card, and can only be used to sign in to Telegram.
- You buy it with Gram (GRAM, formerly called Toncoin) through a TON wallet connected to Fragment.
- When you log in, the confirmation code appears in Fragment for the wallet that owns the number, not by SMS.
- The number can be resold or transferred like other Fragment collectibles.
The trade-off is responsibility: whoever controls the wallet controls the number. Back up the wallet recovery phrase securely and enable two-step verification on the Telegram account. Prices and rules can change, so check Fragment directly before buying.
5. Why free virtual numbers are risky
Public “receive SMS online” numbers are shared by many people. Anyone can request a login code for the same number later and take over the account, and these numbers are frequently already restricted by Telegram because they were used for spam. They are not suitable for an account you care about. If you need several working accounts for a business, an aged account handed over properly, or your own dedicated numbers, is a safer foundation. Our aged vs new accounts guide explains the differences.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sign up for Telegram without any phone number?
No. Telegram needs a number to create an account, but it can be an anonymous +888 number from Fragment instead of a SIM card.
Can other users see my phone number on Telegram?
Only if your privacy settings allow it. Set 'Who can see my phone number' to Nobody and use a username instead.
What is a +888 number?
An anonymous, blockchain-based number sold on Fragment that works only for Telegram sign-in. Login codes are shown in Fragment instead of being sent by SMS.
Are free online SMS numbers safe for Telegram?
No. They are shared, so others can request login codes for the same number, and many are already restricted.
What happens if I lose my SIM card?
If you are still logged in, you can change the number in Settings. If you are logged out without the SIM, recovery is difficult, so keep two-step verification and a recovery email set up.
